Man, which often suppresses emotions, may feel empty and certain
“numbness”. It is difficult for her to understand her feelings, and she can feel
uncomfortable, when someone shows emotions and feelings.
Usually we suppress those emotions and feelings, which are considered negative, or those, which are associated with discomfort: anger, sorrow, fear, disappointment, perplexity, etc..
Why we suppress emotions?
Too often, the habit of suppressing emotions is associated with childhood experiences and communication with parents.
This happens when parents are children:
– rarely showed emotions and talked about their feelings
– ashamed or punished for expressing emotions
– called certain emotions wrong, or denied a particular experience of the child.
When a child's feelings are misunderstood, or severe and painful consequences, then she will know, that it is safer not to show them or to avoid them at all. Becoming an adult, the person continues to hide strong emotions, without even realizing it.
We displace uncomfortable thoughts, emotions and feelings, when we don't know what to do with them. They remain untreated, but can affect our actions.
